Recreated an in-vehicle experience to:

Test a Next-Generation Infotainment System

The Challenge

My client is one of the largest supplier of auto parts. Following our extensive quantitative analysis, they hired us to gather consumer feedback on an early-stage prototype of their next-generation in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system.

They wanted to evaluate the overall usability of the system and gauge reactions to new features before production.

The Process

I simulated the driver’s environment in the lab by recreating an in-vehicle experience and infotainment screen. I affixed the IVI screen (iPad size) upright and anchored the wired control panel below it, as it would be in the vehicle. To the left of the IVI system, a computer monitor simulated the windshield and steering wheel.

My colleague and I moderated the 90-minute sessions while participants used the prototyped system to perform a series of activities. They provided commentary on their thoughts, feelings, and reactions as they completed tasks on the IVI while seated in the “car”.

The Impact

In testing, users had difficulty navigating across the multiple pages and submenus, and struggled to perform practical actions like creating a split-screen and customizing the displays. Many were also ambivalent about some of the new features.

We keyed in on critical usability issues that they could address before production, saving time and money.

My Value

I invited the team to watch the research live and learn directly from participants. I also streamed the sessions for remote observers, which helped those unable to travel still feel connected to the research.

I enjoyed designing the simulated in-vehicle testing environment to show how their IVI system would function in the real world. The client came back for another round of in-person usability, focus groups, an ideation workshop and concept testing.

Reflection

The continued relationship was both fun and rewarding. The techie in me, loved the opportunity to engage with the latest technology showcased in new cars :-) Being involved in so many rounds of research with this client has allowed me to see how the concepts have evolved and been brought to life.
